Persona 4

Last updated 2024-01-19: Forgot to add Ishiro Honda: A Life in Film from Godzilla to Kurosawa.

Overview

This video has been something that was planned since 2022. A lot of it is an extension of a general gap I’ve noticed in Game Studies, which takes a look at the overall meaning-making process of games through a single-player dimension.

Generally, most games analyses presupposed the single player because it’s easier to explain and easier to unfold. The problem with multiplayer analysis is that you have a whole slew of factors, including where people are, what they do before and after loading up the game, how they get involved in a whole set of communal practices.

The problem - or more accurately, the challenge - of a multiplayer procedural focus is not that it cannot be done; games can be analysed specifically on their multiplayer interactions. The problem, however, is that it seems like games tailor built to specific interactions tend to be favoured. Games outside of that purview tend to have more focus on their players.

This isn’t to say there isn’t analysis of games as multiplayer on a procedural level. Shayan Lallani’s Virtual Empire, regardless of whether you think the argument is compelling or not (I’ve had students definitely push back on me on that!), is nevertheless an attempt to engage with an MMORPG more directly on its structural and systemic conditions rather than its social ones. So it’s possible, but it’s rare.

Part of this is because of what John Sharp defines as two overarching typologies of games. Sharp notes that games tend to fall into two categories: artgames, where the system directly attempts to make an argument, and simulations, where a game reflects a pre-existing phenomena. The challenge with multiplayer is that they tend to be the latter: a multiplayer game reflects something like close combat engagement, a SWAT shootout, a bank heist, a game of tennis, etc. Thus, the simulated substrate of the game actively defines the status of the game’s behaviours.

I focused on Persona 4 and Persona 4 Arena specifically because the latter straddles that strange line between simulation and game-with-a-message. The game very much spends a lot of time - and carefully, mind you - to craft a specific sort of interaction zone. It is, in short, a fighting game, and fighting games simulate a specific kind of combat zone interaction (for more information, see Todd Harper’s The Culture of Digital Fighting Games). But what makes Arena is that it tries to use that combat zone to express specific things that are somewhat in line with its single-player brethren. It tries to, in a lot of ways, negotiate between being artgame and simulation.

This is why I wrote the script and made the video the way it is: it’s easier, clearer, and faster to make a video about Persona 4 on its own, that it’s about television and televisual watching specifically through a procedural lens, but it inevitably falls back into the same preferential treatment single-player games have. And if I want to make a video about a piece of media, I want to talk about that piece of media along my terms, what I think is interesting or challenging, and the way in which we think about arguments of procedure are definitely a lot more interesting than talking about television alone.

Further Material:

In the process of editing, I came across Paul Ocone’s work on Furusato, and I realised that he and I have relatively similar perspectives (at least similar enough to mention), so if you want someone who specialized more on that subject, I would recommend taking a look at his work here:

https://www.paulocone.com/

I kinda stole the Overcooked 2 example because it was so good from Game Matters. They have a lot more detail on it, so if you’re interested in seeing the nuts and bolts of it you can see here:

Todd Harper, though I didn’t cite him directly, did effectively write one of the earlier fighting game material in a Game Studies sense. I never cited him because I didn’t end up using his work, but I think his framework ultimately plays a role in informing a lot of the stuff I use as a crux:

Script

Normally I would try and add commentary with a script version, but since the length of the script has crashed my browser a few times now, it’s probably better just to link an embed of the script. Not everything survived the editing process, so there’s going to be a lot of stuff there that just isn’t in the final video, but this was the “base” script that I was editing a lot of my footage off.

Since there are two additional guests, I want to clarify that Tom’s audio is in Red, and LK’s audio is in green. There is a full discussion on Patreon here:

Thomas Lamarre full discussion

Lord Knight full discussion

There is an insane amount of stuff that never got into the final video, simply because the whole structure revolves around a series of loosely connected ideas, so I think if you want to see a lot more of the meat of discussion you should check those out.
